Railway Ministry constitutes disaster panel

NEW DELHI, FEB. 26. The Railway Ministry today announced the constitution of two committees, one to review disaster management arrangements and the other on Railways General Rules.

Headed by the former chairman of Railway Board, Iqbal Inder Mohan Singh Rana, the four-member Disaster Management Review Committee will examine and recommend the Railways' response to earthquakes, floods, cyclones, industrial accidents, and those involving trains carrying explosives, inflammable and hazardous material and fires. The recommendations will dovetail with the National Disaster Management Authority's Global Disaster Management Plan for the country.

The committee will examine the training needs of railwaymen and suggest measures to keep the system in a state of alert. It will also evolve professional crises management. The report will be submitted within six months.

The other committee, comprising of four members, will review the Railways General Rules. It has been set up in accordance with the recommendations made by the Justice H. R. Khanna Safety Review Committee. M.C. Srivastava, a retired Member Traffic, Railway Board, will be its chairman.

The committee will be in office for a period of nine months.
