Publishing house plans lectures on meditation

NEW DELHI OCT. 5. In the run-up to its centenary celebrations in 2003, the premier Indian publishing house of Motilal Banarasidass in association with the U.S.-based Centre for Spiritual Awareness has lined up a series of lectures across the country by Roy Eugene Davis, a direct disciple of Swami Paramahamsa Yogananda.

The series, which began with a meditation session in Delhi on October 2, will be spread across six cities, including Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Pune and Mumbai. The theme of the lectures is "How to meditate for personal benefits and spiritual growth.'' Ordained in the "kriya yoga'' tradition by his guru in 1951, Mr. Davis has since been lecturing throughout the world. He has represented kriya yoga in the U.S. for more than 50 years. Nine of his books published by Motilal Banarasidass Publishers and New Age Press command a wide readership across the country. These include "A Master's Guide to Meditation'', "Living in God'', "Seven Lessons in Conscious Living'' and "The Path of Light''. Mr. Davis had a meditation session at India Habitat Centre here last Wednesday.

This is Mr. Davis's sixth visit to India since 1972. The last time he was here was six years ago for book-signing sessions. "I was amazed to see how the New Age gurus have invaded India. In the intervening years, this craze has only increased,'' he says, adding that Indian spiritual tradition is comprehensive and all-encompassing.

He visited some Udayan Ghar homes for orphans in Delhi. The royalties from his books published by Motilal Banarsidass are given away to the Udayan Ghar project.
