Protest resignations over Cong. candidature

NEW DELHI NOV. 24. Within hours of the Congress high command's decision to field the former MLA, Bheem Raj Bhati, from Bali in the byelection to this Assembly segment in Rajasthan, more than a 100 party leaders from the area resigned from the posts they held in local bodies.

Evidently upset with the party favouring Mr. Bhati over Ummed Singh Champawat, the 112 local Congress leaders today wrote to the AICC general secretary in charge of Rajasthan, Ambika Soni, soon after his candidature was announced.

Their contention was that Mr. Bhati was not in a position to win the seat.

Meanwhile, the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, also cleared the candidatures of Surendra Kumar from Sagwara and Sardara Ram Gurjar from Bansur in the coming byelections in the State.
