Protest marches in Kashmir

Srinagar Oct.5. Thousands of people today took to streets in over a dozen places across Kashmir to protest the reported blasphemous remarks of an American Conservative Party member, about Prophet Mohammad.

Soon after the news was reported in a local daily, angry protestors demonstrated in the Jamia Masjid area of Srinagar, Sopore, Qazigund, Shopian, Pulwama, Pampore, Handwara, Sopore and Chadoora, raising slogans against the US Baptist Minister, Jerry Falwell. They burnt effigies of the U.S. President, George Bush, and the US flag. They erected barricades at many places and threw stones on police. Police resorted to lathicharge and burst dozens of teargas shells to disperse the mobs.
