Powell hails India's peace moves

NEW DELHI OCT. 28. The U.S. Secretary of State, Colin Powell, has expressed the hope that Pakistan would respond positively to India's 12-point peace proposals.

Mr. Powell spoke on telephone to the External Affairs Minister, Yashwant Sinha, who is currently in Brussels to prepare for the India-European Union Summit, scheduled to be held here late November.

The spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry said that Mr. Powell called Mr. Sinha and congratulated India on its peace moves and expressed the hope that Pakistan would respond positively to India's proposals.

Today the Government announced that it was planning to unilaterally implement three of the 12 points in the peace initiative, while hoping that Pakistan would indeed respond positively.

Mr. Powell's interest in a positive outcome of the peace initiative by the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, is being welcomed here.

It is felt that with the United States interested in seeing a reduction of tensions between India and Pakistan, it will become more difficult for Pakistan to reject the proposals outright.
