Former NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Arvind Panagariya has called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “courageous leader” for his government’s decision to select Jio Institute for the ‘Institution of Eminence’ status.

At the inaugural annual leadership summit of the U.S. India Strategic and Partnership Forum (USISPF) on Thursday, he also said that India is all set to develop at a “breakneck” pace in the next 15-20 years as a result of the economic reforms carried out by the Narendra Modi government.

“In India’s environment, any Prime Minister would think twice or thrice (before) they are going to announce something that doesn’t exist because the press is going to be after it,” the former Niti Aayog chief said.

“This is what you need. Because in a new university you can write the rules from scratch, from the beginning. In an existing institution, (bringing) change is much harder,” he argued.
