No-trust move fails in Assam

GUWAHATI: The Congress Government in Assam on Thursday defeated by voice vote an Opposition sponsored no-confidence motion alleging breakdown of law and order situation in the State and the State Government's failure to control the ethnic violence in Karbi Anglong.

When the Opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Brindaban Goswami along with the BJP and Bodo legislators brought the motion and refused to withdraw it, Speaker Prithvi Majhi put it to vote. The motion, which was brought to highlight the State Government's failure to hold the 33rd National Games on time and the price rise, was defeated by voice vote.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in his reply claimed that his Government unlike the earlier AGP-led one had succeeded in improving law and order, the economy and the education scenario. — PTI
