NHRC takes note of farmers' suicides

NEW DELHI, JUNE 1. The National Human Rights Commission has taken serious note of the suicides of debt-ridden and distressed farmers in Andhra Pradesh, including women. On May 31, the Commission took cognizance of some recent newspaper reports about fresh cases of suicides by farmers and has asked for the comments of the Chief Secretary of the Government of Andhra Pradesh within four weeks.The Commission has also requested the State Government to expedite a reply on the recommendations made by K.R.Venugopal, Special Rapporteur of the Commission, suggesting steps to deal with the situation. Mr. Venugopal's recommendations had been forwarded nearly a year ago in connection with an earlier case and the State Government had not responded despite reminders.
