New PCC chiefs

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Wednesday announced the appointment of Karnataka Minister Mallikarjun Kharge to head the State Congress unit. He is among the five new Pradesh Congress Committee chiefs declared by the party.

Mr. Kharge, currently holding Irrigation and Transport portfolios, is a Scheduled Caste leader. He replaces Janardhana Poojary, who has completed his three-year tenure. The party appointed another Scheduled Caste leader, Shamsher Singh Dullo, to be the new party chief in Punjab. Mr. Dullo, a former Lok Sabha MP, is considered to be independent and his appointment comes at a time when the Amarinder Singh Government has come under repeated attack from the Opposition and from within the party. Mr. Dullo replaces H.S. Hanspal, whose term has ended.

The party also cleared the appointment of Pradeep Balmuchu as president of Jharkhand PCC. Samir Ranjan Burman, will be the new chief in Tripura and Vikram Singh Parmar president of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
