MTC withdraws circular services

CHENNAI JAN. 3. Even before the ink on the introduction order could dry, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation has withdrawn its circular services, C-11, C-12 and C-13, which were operated from Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus to CMBT; Adyar to Adyar and K.K.Nagar to K.K.Nagar respectively. The reason: poor patronage.

Instead, the MTC will run only C-13 service, which originates from CMBT and passes through Poonamallee High Road to Broadway and to the Parry's Corner. From there the service reaches Santhome via Kamarajar Salai. Touching Adyar, the service takes the Sardar Patel Road to reach Guindy and back to Koyambedu through Ashok Pillar and Inner Ring Road.

The authorities are also planning another modification. At present the corporation operates about 118 services from the new terminus to various parts of the city. The MTC is planning to revamp the routes of some of the services.

For example, four services are operated on the 23-M route, between Besant Nagar and CMBT. But, the service has not become popular with the commuters and the collection is also not up to the expected level.

So the authorities are planning to revamp the route, in the hope that it would increase the patronage. Similar is the case for 24-G plying between Mandaveli and CMBT besides 70-M Keezhkattalai and CMBT.

On the other hand, services such as 15-B, operated between CMBT and Parrys and 27-B between Anna Square and CMBT have been getting lot of passengers.

Based on this, the MTC is presently operating 18 services on 15-B followed by a dozen buses on the 27-B route.

`Nearly 75 per cent of the services operated from various parts of the city to the new bus terminus at Koyambedu have picked up well and the ticket collection is also good', said a senior official.

He claimed that most parts of the city and its outskirts had been well connected with the new terminus.

The corporation was also planning to conduct a study on the reason for poor collection in some of the routes. Soon after completing it, remedial measures would be taken to make them popular, the sources said.

However, residents of Adyar, Besant Nagar and Tiruvanmiyur complain that they have to take three buses to reach CMBT, as few services are being operated from the southern parts of the city.
