More clout for women in Maharashtra

MUMBAI May 22. The Maharashtra Government has decided to strengthen the position of women heads of the panchayat bodies in the State — now a three-fourth's majority would be needed to remove them instead of the present two-third's support.

The Government will promulgate an ordinance to amend the relevant law, said the Chief Minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde, here today after the weekly meeting of the State Cabinet.

This would strengthen the position of the women chairpersons in the district councils, taluka panchayat samitis and sarpanchas of gram panchayats, he said.
