MMTS train derails a day after inauguration

HYDERABAD AUG. 10. A day after its inauguration, the Multi Model Transport System (MMTS) Secunderabad-Lingampally train derailed near the Kukatpally Housing Board Colony 4th Phase between the Borabanda and the Hitech city railway stations here on Sunday afternoon.

A pair of wheels of the engine jumped the tracks around 11.40 a.m. after the train ran over two buffaloes which were crossing the track.

No passenger was injured in the mishap.

"The train was running at 80 km/hour when the driver noticed two buffaloes crossing the track. He applied the brakes. The wheels derailed when he tried to reverse the train," the Railway Commercial Manager, Ravi Kumar, said.

Senior railway officials, the Kukatpally police and the Railway Protection Force men rushed to the spot. Passengers of the derailed train were sent back to the Secunderabad railway station by the next train coming on the route.

Train services were disrupted on the route for three hours due to the accident.

Asked about the measures being taken by the Railways to prevent such occurrences, the Secunderabad Divisional Railway Manager, P.B. Murthy, said: "We cannot stop cattle from coming onto the track."

The DRM felt that the railway alone could not undertake an awareness campaign. "People and cattle-grazers must be equally careful," he added.

Referring to the demand for installation of more gates along the MMTS train route, Mr. Murthy said that with the increase in the number of trains, chances of accidents too rose.

"We will not allow further installation of gates on this route," he said. Special jacks were brought in to lift the engine and repair the wheels.
