Mayawati demands action against 'errant' officials

BHOPAL SEPT. 21. Charging the Bharatiya Janata Party with hatching a conspiracy to tarnish her image by using the Taj Corridor project issue, the Bahujan Samaj Party leader, Mayawati, said today that action should be taken against "errant" bureaucrats in the case.

"The BJP, along with the `Manuvadi' media, is trying to tarnish my image through the Taj issue... But the BJP will have to pay a heavy price for this as it is not going to be in power for good," she said at a `maha rally' at the Lal Parade Ground here to launch the party's election campaign for the coming Assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh.

If anything went wrong in the matter, the officials should be blamed because the Chief Minister, who deals with thousands of files, generally follows the bureaucrats' advice. "If action is warranted in the Taj case, it should be against the bureaucrats," Ms. Mayawati said.

Asserting that all her properties were in the records of the Income Tax department, she said that what she owned was only a fraction of the properties amassed through corrupt practices by "small-time Manuvadi politicians" of other parties.

On the Ayodhya issue, she said the BSP would accept the court verdict, but if the BJP tried to take the law into its hands, the party would oppose it. — PTI
