Mayawati calls on Advani

NEW DELHI NOV. 7. With dissidence continuing to trouble the BSP-BJP coalition Government in Uttar Pradesh, the Chief Minister, Mayawati, called on the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, at the latter's residence here this evening.

The meeting lasted close to an hour. It is understood that the two discussed the impact of dissidence on the Rajya Sabha elections, besides the present current political situation. While it has been working on a plan to bring back dissidents to its fold, the BJP faces the threat of the dissidents fielding their own candidate in the Rajya Sabha election.

The BJP has so far announced its general secretaries, Rajnath Singh and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, as candidates, but preferred not to name the third. It is understood that the threat of the dissidents has led to the delay in finalising the third candidate. The BJP has votes to see through the two candidates but would require assistance to ensure victory for the third.

Earlier in the day, Ms. Mayawati maintained that the issue of fielding a third candidate was left to the BJP, as the vacancy arose due to the resignation of a BJP member, T.N. Chaturvedi, from the Rajya Sabha, after his appointment as the Karnataka Governor.
