Malnutrition toll 11 in Orissa

BHUBANESWAR, JULY 24. The number of deaths of tribal children due to alleged malnutrition at Dongiriguda village of Orissa's Nawrangpur district has increased to 11 with one more child dying in the district headquarter hospital this morning.

After the district administration came to know of the death of 10 children at Dongiriguda under Jharigaon block early this week, four children were brought to the community health centre at Jharigaon and two more with severe illness were admitted to Nawrangpur Hospital on Friday.

One of the two children brought to Nawrangpur died in hospital today. The other child is battling for life.

Ten children have died at Dongiriguda between June 11 and July 1.

All the victims suffered from diarrhoea and fever. The six children, who were brought for treatment, had similar symptoms.

The district authorities said that all the children who died had suffered from an acute respiratory infection and colitis with worm infestation.

After the Opposition had raised the issue in the Orissa Assembly, the State Government sent a team of three doctors from the MKCG Medical College and Hospital to the affected village on Friday to ascertain the actual cause of the deaths.

The Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik, told presspersons here that the Nawrangpur district administration was taking all possible measures to provide treatment to the affected children.
