Way up in North a celebrity is trying to make an impression in the world of politics and in far away Lovedale, a quaint settlement near Ooty in the South, the journey she has embarked on is being closely followed.

While the celebrity is Gul Panag, former beauty queen, model and actor who is contesting on an Aam Aadmi Party ticket in Chandigarh constituency, those keeping track of her progress are the students, old students and staff of the 156-year-old Lawrence School. Members of the school who spoke to The Hindu said their best wishes were with Ms. Panag and felt she could make a difference. School Principal Sangita Chima said that irrespective of the party she represents, “we are following every move she makes as she is a source of inspiration.” Ms. Panag was the Guest of Honour at the school’s 155th Founder’s Day celebrations in 2013.

Old student, Joseph John, said that Ms. Panag’s progress in politics is now the main topic in discussions.
