Seven persons, including five children, were killed early on Wednesday following landslides at various places in Tamenglong district of Manipur.

Two other children also went missing in the district.

A rescue team of the State Disaster Response Force, led by vice-chairman Adim Panmei, rushed to the hill district.

More landslides may occur in the district since heavy rains continue to lash Manipur, Mr. Panmei said. Adjoining the district, in Nagaland too, rains had triggered landslides damaging NH-2. Manipur will be seriously affected since the highway is the State’s major lifeline.

The police and the firefighters are carrying on rescue works, said Ravindra Singh, Collector of Tamenglong. Villagers are being shifted to safer areas as officials fear more landslides in the hill district.

Though water levels are rising in many reservoirs, all of them are running below the danger level now, the officials said.
