Laloo predicts snap polls

HYDERABAD July 26. The RJD president, Laloo Prasad Yadav, has predicted snap polls for the Lok Sabha in March next.

"Take it from me. The Lok Sabha will be dissolved after the Gujarat elections and the BJP will go in for a mid-term poll. I am doctorate in these things," Mr. Laloo said at a press conference at the Hyderabad airport on Friday. He arrived here from Delhi on a short visit to attend the marriage of the daughter of the TDP MP, S.M. Lal Jan Basha.

Mr.Yadav launched a scathing attack on the NDA Government, alleging that it had failed on all fronts. He appealed to the NDA partners and those supporting the establishment from outside, such as the TDP, to part company with the BJP. "This Government has no right to continue even for one second."

The RJD chief said he would meet the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, if possible, to persuade him to dissociate himself from the NDA. "The talks can take place at the `baraat' itself," he said. Local issues should be set aside to "save the nation", he remarked.

He said the Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, deserved to be detained under POTA. There could be no fair elections under the Modi regime with S.S. Bhandari as the Governor.

Taking potshots at the BJP leadership, he said the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, had been confined to an old age home and the real power centre was the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani.
