Kashmir conflict haunts NATO meet

PRATICA DI MARE MAY 29. Terrorism drove the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and Russia to forge new ties at a landmark summit in Italy, but their most pressing concern turned out to be the danger of war in South Asia.

Inaugurating the NATO-Russia Council at this Italian air base outside Rome on Tuesday, the erstwhile Cold War adversaries called upon India and Pakistan to immediately cool down their conflict over Kashmir. ``The Presidents and Prime Ministers strongly urge both sides to de-escalate and resume talking together so that their problems can be resolved peacefully,'' the NATO Secretary-General, George Robertson, said. — AFP
