‘India on threshold of transformation in skill development'

India is on the threshold of transformation in terms of skill development which will provide greater employability and enhance productivity and quality of youth, said Union Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs Ajay Maken speaking at a United Nations high-level meeting in New York.

Mr. Maken, who is leading the Indian delegation at the conference, pointed out that India had launched a National Skill Development Mission. In addition, a National Skill Development Corporation had been set up to speed up skill development processes. The focus of the initiative was to enhance skills of more than 500 million people in the country by 2022, he told the conference, according to a press release here.

“It is our responsibility to create a conducive climate in which every youth gets gainfully employed. Any long-term unemployment can lead to a wide range of social problems, including susceptibility to delinquency, substance abuse, political unrest and violence. Some of the nations are already experiencing these challenges. Let us use this forum to share our experience and learn from each other's good practices,” he added.

The includes BJP youth leader and MP Anurag Thakur, MP Hamdullah Sayeed, Delhi Assembly MLA Neeraj Basoya, and Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Youth Development director P. Michael Vetha Siromon.
