India, Bangladesh forces exchange fire

Dhaka Jan. 28. Bangladeshi security forces opened fire on BSF troops last night to thwart the alleged push-in of some ``Bangla-speaking Muslims'' into their territory, even as Indian border guards denied any attempt to deport people to the other side and lodged a formal protest with Bangladeshi authorities. Para-military Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and India's Border Security Force troops last night exchanged fire at border points along the Jhenidah district, media reports here said.

The Daily Star newspaper alleged that the BSF tried to push in some 50 Bangla-speaking Indian Muslims on Monday. It claimed that BDR opened fire to foil the bid. Accusing Bangladesh Rifles of unprovoked firing, the BSF DIG, R. P. Singh, denied that BSF was trying to deport some Bengali-speaking Muslims to Bangladesh. — PTI
