Honour for freedom fighter

A commemorative stamp in honour of freedom fighter Pandit K. Santanam, an associate of Lala Lajpat Rai, will be issued this Thursday to mark his 126th birth anniversary.

Mr. Santanam (1885-1949), who practised as barrister at the Lahore High Court, rejected Southern caste orthodoxy to marry Krishna, daughter of Arya Samaj leader Atma Ram Vedi, in 1916. The inter-regional and inter-caste marriage was reported widely in several prominent newspapers.

Mr. Santanam gave up legal practice to join the non-cooperation movement and became actively involved in politics under Lalaji, with whom he had a close personal relationship. He held the positions of Punjab Provincial Congress Committee general secretary, Lahore Municipal Commissioner and AICC general secretary and was jailed during the non-cooperation and Satyagraha movements. He was also the treasurer of an association set up for the defence of Bhagat Singh.
