Focus on water management

Eminent nuclear scientist Anil Kakodkar will inaugurate an international conference on water desalination, treatment and management here today (Thursday), bringing together experts, technocrats, policy-makers and suppliers to deliberate on the issues concerning technical and execution aspects of water management schemes.

Mr. Kakodkar--Homi Bhabha Chair Professor in the Department of Atomic Energy and Atomic Energy Commission Member--is expected to throw light on the operations of the DAE's nuclear desalination hybrid plant attached to the Kalpakkam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu.

The plant of 6.3 million litres per day (MLD) capacity demonstrates the significance and role of thermal and membrane desalination projects. The Malviya National Institute of Technology's Department of Chemical & Civil Engineering is organising the two-day conference in association with the Indian Desalination Association and the Communication & Capacity Development Unit of the Rajasthan Government's Water Resources Department.

Organising secretary and Associate Professor in the department, R. K. Vyas, said here on Wednesday that the conference would enable the stakeholders to formulate guidelines for providing affordable freshwater to the users.

“The event will also help improve the quality of life and accelerate industrial growth of the country,” he said.
