Dreaded Naxal leader active in Gadchiroli

Dreaded Naxal leader Thakapalli Vasudev Rao alias Assannna alias Satish alias Sujit has entered Gadchiroli, according to the Gadchiroli police.

“Assannna, a resident of Warangal district in Andhra Pradesh, was a member of Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee of the Communist Party of India-Maoist and the military instructor of its armed wing,” Superintendent of Police Suvez Haque told The Hindu .

Assanna is believed to be the mastermind behind an assassination bid on the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N. Chandrababu Naidu, near Tirupati in 2003.

He is wanted in cases related to the killing of Deputy Inspector General K.S. Vyas near the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in Hyderabad, the murder of Karimnagar SP Umesh Chandra and the murder of Kurnool MLA Budda Vengal Reddy and many other cases, said Mr. Haque.

He said Assannna was currently a member of Central Committee’s Action Team of the CPI Maoists.

Police suspect that Assannna may be in Gadchiroli to plan some big operation.

The police have declared Rs.1 lakh as reward for anyone who provides information about Assannna.

They are also not sure about the death of one of the senior-most woman Naxal leaders Narmada Akka.

According to some sources, on December 4, last year, a woman Naxalite was killed in an encounter in the Bhamragad division of Gadchiroli and her body was dragged by Naxals inside the forest. After the encounter, there was a rumour that 57-year-old Narmada Akka, Divisional Secretary of South Gadchiroli CPI-Maoist, was the one killed.

Police sources said Narmada Akka’s funeral was carried out at a village in Chhattisgarh but the Naxals did not issue any statement regarding her death.

Narmada Akka has 53 cases registered against her in Maharashtra.
