Displaced families protest outside Tata steel plant

: A group of persons from families displaced due to the shelved mega steel project of Tata Steel in Ganjam district of Odisha demonstrated in front of the project office of the company at Mandiapalli on the outskirts of Berhampur on Tuesday.

The agitators, who were mostly from Sindhigaon village, locked up the gate of the project office and demanded payment of additional rehabilitation and resettlement package. This agitation took place at a time, when Odisha Chief Minister’s office has already approved the new rehabilitation and resettlement package meant for these families, said Tata Steel officials.

“The additional compensation package demanded by the project displaced and affected people, has already been approved by the State government. The detailed implementation plan is under discussion at the district administration level”, said a communiqué of Tata Steel.

Some officials of the company and administration held discussions with the agitators regarding their demand and efforts continuing for payment of new additional compensation package. Tata Steel had acquired 2,970 acres of land in Ganjam district of Odisha for a mega steel project which did not materialize.
