Date extended

The decision comes as officers have sought clarity on terms of service

NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Thursday extended to October 15 the date for absorbing 3,000 Group A officers of the telecom service in Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL). The September 15 deadline was extended as the officers sought clarity on the terms and conditions of service in BSNL and MTNL.

The Cabinet offered them a package for giving up their status of government servants including a 25 per cent rise in emoluments with effect from October 1, 2000 (the day BSNL was converted into a corporation), stagnation increment for senior officers and an additional five-year qualifying service for pension in case they sought voluntary retirement on completion of 20 years.

The Cabinet also gave the officers the option of pro-rata retirement benefits for the services they rendered in the government.

The incentives have failed to enthuse ITS officers who are exploring the legal option.

The Cabinet will also explore alternative arrangements in case the officers resisted giving up their status as government servants and becoming corporation employees.
