Curfew lifted in Hardwar

HARDWAR, APRIL 24. The three-day-old curfew over Kotwali area of Hardwar was lifted today after life returned to normal. Police and paramilitary forces continued to patrol the area to ensure that anti-social elements did not vitiate the atmosphere again.

Curfew was clamped on Wednesday following large scale violence by a section of policemen and residents. This left one person dead and over 30 injured. The police had damaged nearly a dozen shops in various localities under the Kotwali police station. The residents retaliated by mobbing the Kotwali and burning two Government vehicles. The incidents were sparked by the alleged misbehaviour of three drunken constables with a trader's wife on Tuesday evening. The policemen have since been suspended and about a dozen more have been identified for having looted or damaged the shops. The constabulary seemed to be out of control of senior officers for nearly 24 hours.
