CPI(M) rules out third front

SHIMLA JAN. 28. The CPI(M) has ruled out any alliance with the Himachal Vikas Congress of Sukhram, who is hobnobbing with the Congress and the BJP in New Delhi.

Addressing a press conference here today, the State secretariat member and former MLA, Rakesh Singha, said there was no possibility of forming a third front of non-BJP and non-Congress parties at this juncture. Though it was important to stall the BJP in the State immediately, the front could only be formed on the basis of alternative policies.

The CPI(M), which named Sanjay Chauhan, vice-president of the State unit of the Kisan Sabha, as its candidate for the Shimla Assembly seat, has decided to contest only four seats in the coming Assembly elections.

It would only ally with the CPI, which had decided to contest five seats.

Other than Shimla, the most prestigious Assembly seat, the CPI(M) would nominate candidates for the Nahan, Rampur and Kinnaur seats and the CPI would field candidates for the Kot Kehloor, Hangra, Banikhet, Doon and Chchiot Assembly segments.

The CPI(M) has named O.P. Chauhan, as the convener of the Campaign Committee.
