CPI(M) plea to EC

NEW DELHI, APRIL 24. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the Election Commission to direct the Government of India to withdraw its order diluting the reservation percentage for the compulsory use of jute bags for packing foodgrains and sugar on the ground that it violates the model code of conduct

Referring to the order issued by the Ministry of Textiles on April 16, the CPI(M) said the reservation percentage had been reduced from 100 per cent to 60 per cent for packing foodgrains and from 90 per cent to 50 per cent for sugar.

The party general secretary, Harikishen Singh Surjeet, said in the letter that the dilution effected by the Jute Packaging Materials (compulsory use in Packing Commodities) Act 1987 would hit hard the jute industry.
