Congress retains Jamalpur seat

AHMEDABAD Dec. 4. The Congress has retained the minority-dominated Jamalpur seat in the Gujarat Assembly in the byelection the result for which was declared here today.

Shabbir Kabliwala of the Congress won the seat with a margin of 17,698 votes over his nearest BJP rival, the former Ahmedabad Mayor, Lalji Parmar, registering a marginal improvement in its performance in the last December Assembly elections when its nominee, Usmangani Devdiwala, won the seat by a margin of over 14,000 votes.

The byelection was caused by the death of Devdiwala, who had been winning the seat in the last three elections, twice earlier as an independent and last time as the Congress nominee.
