Congress, BJP raking Ayodhya issue for political gains: AIMPLB

NEW DELHI, MARCH 3. The All-Indian Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) today told the Liberhan Commission that the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party were raising the Babri Masjid demolition issue in Ayodhya for their political gains.

Counsel for the AIMPLB, Yousuf H. Muchhala, making his final arguments before the Commission, submitted "the Ayodhya dispute has been used by the political parties. First by the Congress and then by the BJP. Both parties showed pseudo-religious attitude towards the issue."

Counsel accused the BJP as a "fascist" party and regretted that the leadership, including the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K Advani, and the Union Human Resource Minister, Murli Manohar Joshi, were totally "insensitive" towards the minority communities, particularly the Muslims.

Quoting from the affidavit of Anju Gupta, police officer in-charge of security of Mr. Advani on the day of December 6, 1992, in which she had referred to the incident of violence towards Muslims, counsel said the "indifferent and insensitive" attitude was evident when Mr. Advani condemned the incident after 10 years before this Commission. Mr. Joshi had not done even that till today.

To a question from Justice Liberhan whether there had been any pre-plan or conspiracy in the demolition of the structure, he said the evidence available with the Commission so far had not pointed the people responsible for the demolition of the Babri Masjid, though it could be said that there was a conspiracy.
