Bankura University Bill passed

The West Bengal Assembly passed here on Wednesday the ‘Bankura University Bill, 2013,’ paving the way for setting up a new State University with jurisdiction over colleges in Bankura district.

The proposed university will reduce the present academic overload on Burdwan University and help greater penetration of higher education among the backward classes in Bankura.

Non-recurring expenditure of Rs. 15 crore will be incurred for setting up the infrastructure for the University, according to the Bill. An additional Rs. 5 crorewill be recurring annual expenditure.

“A part of the recurring expenditure can be met by the university out of its own resources that may be mobilised by way of registration fees, examination fees, inspection fees, sale of publications as well as grants from the University Grants Commission,” the Bill states.

Meanwhile, addressing a public gathering during the day, at Raiganj in Uttar Dinajpur district, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said Raiganj College (University College) would be upgraded to a University and work on the project would start from 2015. She said that the previous Left Front government had named it a University College but the institution did not serve the purpose of a University.
