Awards for low-cost housing projects

NEW DELHI MARCH 29. The Association for Voluntary Action and Services (AVAS), Bangalore, has bagged the first of the seven awards instituted by the HUDCO and the Hari Om Ashram Trust in Nadiad, Gujarat, for low cost housing projects.

Announcing the winners of the `All India Low Cost Housing Competition on Squatter Settlement Upgradation/ Rehabilitation', the HUDCO Chairman and Managing Director, V. Suresh, said that the AVAS has been chosen for the honour for its slum rehabilitation project at Hosakerahalli involving rehabilitation of 127 slum dwellers living along the vital Ring Road in poor housing and sanitary conditions. These squatters have been given one dwelling unit per family with all infrastructure. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 1.4 lakhs.

The second award carrying a cash prize of Rs. 90,000 has gone to the Habitat Technology Group, Kerala, for the Pizhikkara slum redevelopment project at Veli tourist village in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, that led to rehabilitation of 72 fishermen.

Two third prizes of Rs. 45000 have gone to the Municipal Corporation of Rajkot for rehabilitation of slums at Dharam Nagar, near Raiya Circle, and the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board for rehabilitation of slums at Okkiyum Thuraipakkam, Chennai,

The Community Development Information and Action Centre, Chennai, Shivshahi Punarvasan Prakalp Ltd., Mumbai, and the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Corporation Ltd, Bellary, Karnataka, have been honoured with consolation prizes of Rs. 20,000 each for the rehabilitation projects carried out by them in their respective areas.
