A.P., Telangana account for 12.6 p.c. of crimes against Dalits, data show

Telangana and Andhra Pradesh together account for a good share of crimes committed against weaker sections in the country. In 2014, the two States recorded 12.6 per cent of total crimes against Dalits and 10.5 per cent of crimes against Adivasis.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Andhra Pradesh registered 4,114 cases of crimes against Dalits in 2014 and Telangana accounted for 1,694 such cases. As many as 47,064 cases of crime against Dalits were registered across the country the same year.

The twin States also accounted for 1,196 cases of crime against Adivasis in 2014 of which Andhra Pradesh recorded 627 cases and Telangana 569.

The crimes listed include IPC crimes with SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, IPC crimes without prevention of SC/ST atrocities act and protection of civil rights act, among others.

The rate of cognisable crime (per one lakh population) among Dalits in AP is 48.7 even as it is 31.2 in Telangana. When it comes to Adivasis, the rate of cognisable crime is at 26.3 in AP and 17.3 in Telangana.Women easy targets

Within these socially disadvantaged communities, women face a high incidence of sexual crimes, data revealed.

In Andhra Pradesh, 61 cases of rape of Dalit women were registered while in Telangana 87 such cases were registered. Cases of assault on Dalit women with intention to outrage modesty were at 116 in Andhra Pradesh and 65 in Telangana the same year.

During the same period, 17 sexual harassment cases were reported in Andhra Pradesh and 13 in Telangana.
