`Strict action is needed as otherwise the BJP may surreptitiously circulate the CD'

NEW DELHI: The Congress and the Communist Party of India on Thursday welcomed the move by the Election Commission directing the Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh to file an FIR against the Bharatiya Janata Party and its leadership for producing and circulating a compact disc containing inflammatory campaign material.

The parties said the EC should, in fact, take more stringent action against the BJP and its leadership for indulging in such practices. "The EC should take strong action against the BJP and its leadership, and the people behind it should be punished," Union Minister and Congress party spokesperson Kapil Sibal said here.

Mr. Sibal, who addressed a press conference along with Mohan Prakash, said that according to information, top BJP leaders had seen the campaign material before it was released for viewing. He said the Congress felt that unless stringent action was taken, the BJP would circulate it surreptitiously, because the party "believes in the politics of hate." The CPI too said just lodging an FIR and serving show-cause notice were not enough.

"The CD shows the real face of the BJP. The EC should take a serious view and think of taking bigger action. Those directly responsible should be penalised," party national secretary D. Raja said. CPI (M) Lok Sabha leader Basudeb Acharia said the EC should take action against the BJP for using communally sensitive material during the campaign. The party was indulging in activities it had also done in the past.
