Amit Shah calls off rallies in naxal areas

BJP president Amit Shah called off, at the eleventh hour, the two rallies in the naxal-affected districts of Gadchiroli and Chandrapur in Maharashtra on Sunday, citing “technical” reasons. But the anti-naxal forces deployed at the venue played down security concerns as the reason.

His helicopter was to have landed at ITI Ground, Gadchiroli, and Chanda Club Ground, Chandrapur, at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. respectively. Over 5,000 people had gathered at Gadchiroli, braving the heat.

Senior BJP leader and State Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar said Mr. Shah’s visits were called off because of technical glitches “that cannot be disclosed at this point.”
