Aiming for gold, says Rathore

NEW DELHI, AUG. 21. The Chief of the Army Staff, General N.C. Vij, has assured all possible facilities to the Athens Olympics silver medallist, R.S. Rathore, to help him aim for the gold medal at the next games in Beijing. "Talent must be promoted with proper infrastructure and backing, so that our sportspersons can do the country proud," said Gen. Vij while felicitating Maj. Rathore on his return from Athens today.

On behalf of the Army, Gen. Vij presented Maj. Rathore with a cheque for Rs. 10 lakhs as a token of appreciation.

Earlier, on arrival at the airport, the Deputy Chief of the Army Staff, J.B.S. Yadava, and other senior officers welcomed him.

Speaking to newspersons, Maj. Rathore said he would aim for gold in the next Olympics. "No one in the Army can ever settle for the second best. There are many more Olympics to come," said the only Indian to win an individual silver medal in the Olympics.

A former instructor with the Infantry School in Mhow, Maj. Rathore said the country's performance in the ongoing Olympics games was good.

Indians could win more medals if adequate facilities and other resources were provided to sportspersons.
