VELLORE: Students will be the event managers for ‘Riviera 2009,’ the sports and cultural festival being organised by the VIT University at its campus here from January 30 to February 2.

“Riviera is an annual inter-collegiate and inter-university cultural and sports festival conducted at the national level every year,” said G. Viswanathan, Chancellor, and Sekar Viswanathan, Pro-Chancellor of the university. “Our students want to make this year’s festival an international event to coincide with the VIT’s Silver Jubilee celebrations.”

Unlike in the previous years, when the VIT used to entrust the Riviera to a professional event manager, the entire organisational work connected with the festival this year would be undertaken by the students themselves.

About 1,000 students had been put in charge of all the work, right from securing sponsorships to meeting celebrities to be invited.

Mr. Viswanathan and Mr. Sekar Viswanathan said more than 2,000 students from different universities and colleges in the country and a few from Sri Lanka and Germany would participate in the event.

Pro-Chancellor G.V. Selvam said 25 celebrities had been invited. Each day, one celebrity would give away the first prizes for various events.
