Stop construction over the Ganga: Swamy

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to stop all dam construction activities at various points on the Ganga, especially from the Bhagirathi river stage.

Addressing mediapersons here on Tuesday, Dr. Swamy said that during his two days trekking up the Ganga banks from Haridwar to Gangotri from where the river originates, he found reckless diversion of the river waters and gross pollution. He said he would file a Public Interest Litigation if the government did not stop construction activities on the river.

He added that he had already written two letters to the Prime Minister in this connection and expressed hope that better sense would prevail upon the Government.

Dr. Swamy described the delegation of ruling party MPs to Sri Lanka as ridiculous and said no purpose would be served by such visits.
