Speaker’s office above partisan politics: Somnath

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The office of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha said here on Thursday that the Speaker’s position was above partisan politics and Somnath Chatterjee had kept away from all political activities after assuming the office to which he had been elected unanimously by all political parties.

In a statement issued by the Lok Sabha secretariat it was asserted “as and when any decision is taken by the Hon’ble Speaker, relevant to the present political context, the media will be kept informed.”

Mr. Chatterjee said his attention had been drawn to media reports speculating about his continuing in office. He was indirectly referring to reports on his possible resignation after withdrawal of support to the United Progressive Alliance government by the Left.

Giving an indication of his mind, the Speaker pointedly stated he “was not elected as a nominee of any party.” And in the discharge of his duties and functions “he does not owe allegiance to any political party.”

His request to the media was not to drag the highest legislative office of the country into controversies by speculative reports and undeserved innuendos.
