Seven school principals suspended in Manipur

IMPHAL: The Manipur government has suspended seven principals for writing letters stating that their students would not participate in the Republic Day marchpast.

It may be recalled that the Revolutionary People’s Front, a proscribed underground organisation, had asked the principals not to send the students as a part of its State-wide boycott call. The police have registered cases against the principals and arrested them.

The All-Manipur Higher Secondary Schools Welfare Association has criticised the government action. Its spokesman said that though the principals were arm-twisted to write the letters by the militants, the students took part in the march past and some contingents had even bagged prizes.

He said if the cases were not withdrawn and the principals not released, the Association would launch an agitation.
