Saraswat assumes office

CHENNAI: V.K. Saraswat assumed office as Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister and Director General of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in New Delhi on Tuesday. M. Natarajan, outgoing Scientific Advisor handed over charge to Dr. Saraswat on Monday.

Mr. Natarajan superannuated after a career of 39 years in the DRDO.

A DRDO press release said Dr. Saraswat would also be Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development.

He was earlier Chief Controller, Research and Development (Missiles and Strategic Systems), DRDO.

In that capacity, he led the development of India’s tactical and strategic missile systems, including the Agni series missiles with a range of 3,000 km, apart from the Air Defence System against hostile ballistic missiles.

Dr. Saraswat, who has a Ph.D. in Combustion Engineering, started his career in 1972 at the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), a DRDO unit in Hyderabad. He later became Director, Research Centre, Imarat, Hyderabad.
