CHENNAI: The former Sri Lankan Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, on Thursday lauded the efforts taken by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee to create space for humanitarian relief in the Vanni area.

Talking to journalists here, Mr. Wickremesinghe said he had already spoken to the Sri Lankan President, Mahinda Rajapaksa, on the Tamils issue and urged him to bring together leaders of the Tamil National Alliance and Muslim parties to resolve the issue concerning civilians.

Answering a question on the continued attacks on fishermen from Tamil Nadu, Mr. Wickremesinghe said in 2005 during his tenure a pact was signed between the Sri Lankan government and the Indian government. If that was implemented, the problems would be solved, he suggested.

Mr. Wickremesinghe was in New Delhi on Wednesday during which time he met leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party and Communist Party of India (Marxist) and briefed them about the situation in the island.
