He died at a private hospital due to heart failure

MALAPPURAM: State president of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) Panakkad Syed Mohammedali Shihab Thangal died at a private hospital here on Saturday evening. He was 73.

Shihab Thangal was admitted to the K.P.M. Orchid Hospital on Saturday morning after he injured his lip in a fall on Friday. His family sources said his condition was stable till Saturday evening. According to hospital sources, the death was due to heart failure.

A couple of hours prior to Shihab Thangal’s death, his brother-in-law Syed Mohasin Thangal passed away after prolonged illness.

Shihab Thangal’s immediate family members, including his wife Aysha and sons Syed Basheerali Shihab and Syed Munawwarali Shihab, were away at the time of his death. They had gone to Karuvananthiruthi, near Feroke, to pay homage to Syed Mohasin Thangal, brother-in-law of Shihab Thangal, who died a couple of hours earlier. Shihab Thangal had been suffering from multiple ailments, including diabetes and high blood pressure, for the past several years.

He was born on May 4, 1936. He led the IUML as its State president for 34 years. He took over the leadership after his father P.M.S.A. Pookoya Thangal’s death in 1975. He had his primary education at the Madrasathul Mohammadiyya High School, Kozhikode.

He continued his studies at Kananchery Dars and finished his higher education at the Al Azhar Islamic University, Cairo.

An undisputed leader of the Muslim community, Thangal was Kazi to hundreds of mahals in Kerala.

His first wife Fatima died three years ago. He married Aysha later.

He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. The body will be interred on Sunday afternoon at Panakkad.
