Members appointed for Armed Forces Tribunal

NEW DELHI: The Centre has approved the appointment of judicial and administrative members of the Armed Forces Tribunal, an independent forum charged with dispensing speedy justice to personnel of the armed forces.

The judicial members are Justice Janardan Sahai; Justice (retd.) K. Padmanabhan Nair; Justice (retd.) Shilendra Shankar Kulshrestha; Justice (retd.) Ghanshyam Prasad; Justice Manak Lall Mohta; Justice A.C. Arumugaperumal Adityan; Justice (retd.) Anwar Ahmad; and Justice Bhanwaroo Khan, an official release said on Monday.

The administrative members are Lt. Gen. (retd.) S. Pattabhiraman; Lt. Gen. (retd.) Amrik Singh Bahia; Lt. Gen. (retd.) Madan Gopal; Lt. Gen. (retd.) Susheel Gupta; Lt. Gen. (retd.) M.L. Naidu; Lt. Gen. (retd.) H.S. Panag; Lt. Gen. (retd.) Thomas Mathew; Lt. Gen. (retd.) P.R. Gangadharan; Lt. Gen. (retd.) S.S. Dhillon; Lt. Gen. (retd.) Z.U. Shah; Lt. Gen. (retd.) R.K. Chhabra; Lt. Gen. (retd.) N.S. Brar; Vice Admiral (retd.) R.F. Contractor; Lt. Gen. (retd.) B.S. Sisodia; and Commodore (retd.) Mohan Phadke.

The Armed Forces Tribunal Act, passed by Parliament in 2007, came into effect in June last year. It provides for adjudication by the tribunal of disputes and complaints about commission, appointments, enrolment and service conditions in respect of those covered by the Three Services Act, and hearing of appeals arising out of orders, findings or sentences of court martial. The tribunal will have original jurisdiction in service matters and appellate jurisdiction in court martial matters. Justice Ashok Kumar Mathur has been appointed the chairman of the tribunal, which has the principal bench in Delhi and regional benches in Chandigarh, Lucknow, Kolkata, Guwahati, Mumbai, Kochi, Chennai and Jaipur.
