CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has welcomed the Centre’s decision to send Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon and National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan to Sri Lanka.

He expressed the hope that their mission would bring the much-needed solace and peace to Tamils badly affected by war. Earlier, speaking to Home Minister P. Chidambaram, he emphasised the need for an immediate ceasefire to ensure that there is no suffering to Sri Lankan Tamils.

Mr. Chidambaram, who was in Chennai on Thursday morning, rushed back to New Delhi to attend a Cabinet meeting on the Sri Lankan issue. After the meeting, he briefed Mr. Karunanidhi on the outcome. The Chief Minister then stressed the need to provide adequate relief to those affected at an early date.
