Gujarat results a dangerous sign: Basu

Special Correspondent

Kolkata: Describing the Gujarat results as a “dangerous” sign, veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu said here on Monday that it was for the Left parties to take on the responsibility of combating the forces of communalism as it was evident that the Congress had failed to do so.

He was also critical of the manner in which the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre was playing into the hands of the U.S.

“We have been repeatedly reminding the UPA government of the need to keep its commitment to the Common Minimum Programme that calls for adopting an independent foreign policy,” Mr. Basu said at the North 24 Parganas district conference of the CPI(M) at Rajarhat.

“Manmohan Singh is a good man and I know him for a long time. When he last met me, I told him that the people are saying that you are becoming pro-American. He said that it was not true. But it is true,” Mr. Basu said. The U.S. wanted to extend its imperialist hold across the world. “We can never allow that to happen,” he said.
