EC system of online results disappoints

Special Correspondent

Website did not open up when crucial rounds of counting were in progress

Reporters, TV channels forced to turn to unofficial sources or activate their own network

HYDERABAD: The new system adopted by the Election Commission to announce election results online turned out to be a disappointment to many on Saturday. There was inordinate delay in furnishing the details of the official results. Full details of the results of many Parliamentary and Assembly constituencies were not available on the commission’s website even at 6 p.m. Press reporters and TV channels were forced to turn to unofficial sources or activate their own network in the districts to get the details of the results.

The Election Commission announced that the results would be made available on its website ( >www.eci.nic.in) but finally, the details were provided on another site (http://eciresults.nic.in). The bitter experience undergone by many, however, was that this site did not open up when crucial rounds of votes counting were in progress and when the final outcome was announced. And the results of the Assembly constituencies were not provided in the prescribed format and instead, merely the names of the winning candidates and his/her nearest rival who lost, were given along with the votes polled by them. The details of the Parliamentary constituencies were out of picture for a long time. As against the promise of announcing the results online, the staff of the returning officer appeared to have filled the relevant forms manually. Sources said many returning officers did not use online facility to transmit the results. Having no other go, the software staff in the office of the Chief Electoral Officer contacted the offices of the returning officers and obtained the details through a video-conference facility for most of the day.

During the counting of votes, “control units” did not display the figures of votes cast in favour of candidates at some places in Guntur, Visakhapatnam and East Godavari districts.
