Children's home head held on molestation charge

The managing director of a children's home at Mookuperi under Nazareth police limits was held on charges of molestation on Wednesday night.

According to the police, a complaint was filed that R. Stephen Joseph (57) of the Little Angel Home for Children had molested a 15-year-old girl belonging to Dharmapuri. It was reported that he had repeatedly indulged in this offence and when it had come out in the open, the parent of another inmate in the home, who was also a victim, had assaulted him with an iron rod. Subsequently, he was taken to Government Hospital, Tirunelveli, sources said.

J. Rajendran, Superintendent of Police and R. Rajagopal, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sathankulam reached the spot and enquired about the incident. The home, which had 23 girls and 13 boys, obtained government registration in 2010, Mr. Rajagopal, said.

On the guidance of District Social Welfare Officer P. Muthunayagam, the affected girl, lodged a complaint. Based on it, cases were booked under various sections of IPC, Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Women's Harassment Act, and SC / ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. On the other hand, Mr. Joseph also lodged a complaint.

The Social Welfare Officer is taking steps to transfer the inmates to a safer place.
