Guwahati: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday arrested the Deputy General Manager of the National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC), B.C. Dhiman, on a charge of offering bribe to the Investigating Officer on the CBI office premises here.

CBI Superintendent of Police Hiren Nath told The Hindu that Mr. Dhiman was arrested for allegedly trying to give Rs.5 lakh as bribe to the officer probing a case of alleged irregularities in the construction of more than 100 roads by the NBCC in the city over a period of five to six years.

The CBI, Guwahati branch, registered a case under Section 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 against Mr. Dhiman and others. A sum of Rs.5 lakh was recovered from the spot in the presence of independent witnesses.

Surprise checks were conducted on the roads constructed when Mr. Dhiman was the Deputy Project Manager of the firm. The checks were completed on Friday and a number of anomalies detected.

“The NBCC official approached the I.O. and offered him to pay a bribe of Rs.5 lakh. We then decided to trap and catch him red-handed. The entire episode has been video recorded,” Mr. Nath added.
